Abstract

Rabies is still present in several regions of Poland. The favorable epizooticsituation in the country was interrupted by the rabies outbreak in the MazowieckieVoivodeship in 2021, resulting in an increase in the number of cases in animals,mainly the red foxes. Immediate measures introduced by the VeterinaryInspection, including emergency vaccination and additional campaigns of oralimmunization of foxes (oral rabies vaccination, ORV), effected in the inhibition ofthe virus spread in the wild animals population, leading finally to a decrease inthe number of reported rabies cases. The paper presents data on rabies casesin domestic animals, wildlife animals as well as bats, including the contributionof individual animal species and geographical distribution of rabies in Poland,in 2022. Thus, the need for close and comprehensive surveillance of ORV in theelimination of rabies in the field was emphasized.
